Digital Graveyard
🇬🇧 In a world where we share our information with the digital world so easily, where the AI algorithms have shaped your personal user profile for immersive interactions… what happens to our created personas, once we are dead?
Digital Graveyard is an art installation questioning our relationship with technology, through the spectrum of Artificial Intelligence. The idea of the installation birthed during a Creative Tech Course at Värmeverket. It is a group project created by four other students along me : Aysha, Thiveja, Natalie and Lisa. The goal was to create AI-driven art piece for an exhibit at Tekniska Museet.
Digital Graveyard is a concept that questions how AI, particularly tools like ChatGPT, influences our relationship with memory and privacy. We wanted to highlight the growing dependency on AI, where people freely share personal thoughts, memories, and emotions without boundaries. This inspired us to create a space where AI isn’t just a tool but a medium for nostalgia and human connection, but also a way of provoke emotions and raising questions about dependency, privacy, the future of memory…
Our will was to set up old TVs to represent the graveyard, and each of them would host personas, some interactive and some non-interactive. My role in the project was to create a small prototype of an interactive character. For that, I used TouchDesigner, a software for visual interactive experiences ; I also used Python, and APIs from OpenAI (Whisper and ChatGPT) and from ElevenLabs. The challenges were to be able to transform the user’s question into text (Speech-To-Text / STT), transfer that text into chatGPT so it could generate an answer, and then, transform that text into a voice (Text-To-Speech / TTS), along the fact that we had clear ideas for the visuals. We wanted to get the visuals reacting to the AI voice, as if it was a living thing. With the allotted time – less than 10 days – I was able to create a working prototype, but I couldn’t focus on the visuals yet. This is why we also created a 3D demo to showcase our idea.
